Asus U50F Intel Core i3 Notebook PC ( Manufacturer Refurbished) Review
I was skeptical purchasing a refurbished laptop, but I am on a budget and needed a reliable, speedy computer. The ASUS U50F refurbished unit offered the best option for this purpose. I am a home computer hobbyist and build my own tower computers and have always used ASUS motherboards, so my confidence that this computer would be high quality was high. It arrived in a factory box packed inside an outer box that was falling apart, but the laptop itself was in like new condition. So far this lap top has exceeded my expectations:
Pros: The Screen is bright with a sweet HD resolution, even in battery save mode when not plugged in. The chiclet keyboard is a perfect match with my light touch typing skills, but I can see how someone with a heavy key punch style of typing could easily flex the keyboard as described by other reviews. The addition of the numeric key pad is a great feature, albeit smaller keys, but it works fine. The i3 processor is more than enough processor to handle my video editing software and the 4mb of ram is sufficient to load my work and plugins quickly. Unlike other reviews, I am able to squeeze out 4 hours of battery life by adjusting the intel power manager for optimized battery life when not plugged into an AC outlet.
Cons: The HDD locked up twice while I was initially testing the unit. I performed a scan and repair disc, and defragmented it, and the problem resolved. I suspect the HDD had a bad sector and it was corrected during the scan disc.
Summary: Overall this is a great value for a laptop with an i3 processor. I did buy the Squaretrade 3 year warranty and I am glad I did given the initial HDD problem. The warranty is cheap insurance. I would buy a refurbished unit again.
